A Virgin Shall Conceive and Bear a Son

Introduction:

How spectacular was it that a virgin gave birth?  What did this mean to the original audience?  What does it mean for me today?  These are questions that need answered.  Let’s pray.

  1. Who was the original audience and what were the circumstances surrounding it?  - Isaiah 7:5-10

Ahaz the 11th king of Judah was plotted against by Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, but God said it will not pass.

  1. What invitation does God make to Ahaz? - Isaiah 7:11-12

God invites Ahaz to ask for a sign to reveal His power, anything in the depth or height above.  How would you like that opportunity?  Do not be fooled by Ahaz seeming piety though it is insincere.

  1. Why does God give Ahaz a sign anyway? - Isaiah 7:13

God now addresses the house of David, in other words, Ahaz’s descendants.  God is speaking through Isaiah and Isaiah is getting frustrated and weary.  God is saying you’re going to weary man but will you weary God also?

  1. What is the sign? – Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23

-Give you a sign, you is plural here meaning it is not for Ahaz but the house of David.

-Behold, meaning a future prophecy, a virgin will give birth.

-His name will be Immanuel.  This is a declaration of the incarnation of God.

  1. When is this sign first prophesied? – Genesis 3:15

Jesus is referenced as her seed.  Notice the seed comes from a man but here it is applied to a woman.  Here you also see Satan’s seed.  This will be Satan’s ultimate and last resort deception, to pose as Christ Himself and will be accepted as the messiah (John 5:23).

  1. How do we see this sign in the heavens? - Psalm 19:1, Numbers 24:17

The 12 signs of the Zodiac actually have Hebrew origins and are referenced to the 12 tribes of Israel but have been perverted through paganism and mythology through Babylonian false worship.  One of the signs is Virgo which means virgin and is always pictured with a branch in her right hand and some ears of corn in the left hand.

Jesus said “…Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone, but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit”.  John 12:24

In Arabic it means a branch, in Egypt it means a seed, in Chaldean it means the son who cometh.

  1. Was the arrival of Christ seen in the heavens in the at His birth? Matthew 2:1, 2

The wise men (magos=magi) tracked a star that brought them to the King of Kings.  Magi is where we get the word magic from.  The concordance defines magi as Oriental scientist, a magician, a sorcerer.  They obviously would have known the science of astronomy.

  1. How would gentile scientists know anything about the prophecies of the Messiah?

First we need to track where the magi has its origins.

1 – Daniel, who was given the Babylonian name Belteshazzar, was called the master of the magicians.  Daniel 4:9, 5:11

2 – Daniel had profound knowledge on the timing of Christ. Daniel 9:25

It is very likely that, since Daniel a Jewish captive was brought to Babylon and learned the sciences and became the wisest of the wise, passed the knowledge on in the sect of the Magi concerning the coming of the Messiah.  Astromony, not astrology, pointed to the Messiah…literaly.

  1. Were the visiting wise men prophesied? - Isaiah 60:1, 6

It was said that light would lead the wise men to the Light of the world.

  1. Do we see a pregnant woman in the cosmos anywhere else in the Bible?Revelation 12:1, 2

A woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and a crown of 12 stars.

This is referencing the church (a women represents a church in prophecy).

Sun – Represents Jesus, His gospel, and His righteousness.

Moon – The sacrificial system of the Old Testament.

Crown of stars – The work of the 12 disciples.

Conclusion:

What does it mean to us?  It is just as important to understand the woman in the first advent of Christ as it is to understand the woman in the second advent of Christ.  Many missed the signs the first time, let us not miss it the second time.  If you have not already make sure you are placed safely in the arms of God in His church.

Amen

"Emmanuel, God with us," this means everything to us. What a broad foundation does it lay for our faith. What a hope big with immortality does it place before the believing soul. God with us in Christ Jesus to accompany us every step of the journey to heaven. The Holy Spirit with us as a comforter, a guide in our perplexities, to soothe our sorrows, and shield us in temptation. "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!"

God commanded Moses for Israel, "Let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them," and He abode in the sanctuary, in the midst of His people. Through all their weary wandering in the desert, the symbol of His presence was with them. So Christ set up His tabernacle in the midst of our human encampment. He pitched His tent by the side of the tents of men, that He might dwell among us and make us familiar with His divine character and life.

Since Jesus came to dwell with us, we know that God is acquainted with our trials and sympathizes with our griefs. Every son and daughter of Adam may understand that our Creator is the friend of sinners.

"God with us" is the surety of our deliverance from sin, the assurance of our power to obey the law of heaven.

Christ sought to teach the grand truth so needful for us to learn, that God is always with us, an inmate of every dwelling, that He is acquainted with every action performed on earth. He knows the thoughts that are framed in the mind and endorsed by the soul. He hears every word that falls from the lips of human beings. He is walking and working in the midst of all our transactions in life. He knows every plan, and He measures every method.
